SAFETY TIPS

If you recall we asked several weeks ago that you start preparing for cooler weather. Now that temperatures are dropping and the cooler weather is here we would like to make a few safety suggestions.
1. You should have your chimney checked, your heater cleaned, fireplaces and wood stoves checked. Homes that have fireplaces should have the chimney checked closely to make sure there is no buildup of soot which could cause a backup of smoke and gases in your home. Soot will burn and set your chimney on fire.
2. Heaters should be cleaned and serviced so they run properly and not backfire which will fill your home with smoke and fumes.
3. Fireplaces and wood stoves should be serviced to make sure they are in proper working order along with the chimneys to make sure they do not have any blockages and have a good draft to draw the smoke up the chimney.
4. People thinking of using space heaters should not place them near any furniture, drapes, newspaper. Space heaters need space to work. When filling a space heater with kerosene, they should be taken outside to cool and filled, never fill them inside or when they are in use. When getting kerosene do not put it in the container you use for your lawn mower. Service people should not even put kerosene in a gas container.
5. One of the most important things to remember is to clean and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and make sure they are in working order, if not replace them, your life may depend on them.
